Overcoming Addiction and Walking in Freedom Through Christ
If you are struggling with any kind of addiction or lack of self-control—whether it’s drugs, pornography, anger, swearing, unforgiveness, or anything else—God has given us a way to overcome.
The first step is this:
1. Change Your Focus
Colossians 3:2 says:
“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
What you focus on matters. What you watch, listen to, and fill your mind with will influence your life.
If you constantly feed your mind with things that are ungodly, you are making the battle harder. Even things that may seem harmless can influence you over time. The conversations you listen to, the entertainment you consume, and the things you constantly think about are shaping you.
For example, someone who constantly surrounds themselves with anger, bitterness, and profanity can begin to take those things on themselves.
You have to change your focus.
Get your mind off the things that are pulling you down and set your mind on the things of God. Fill yourself with His Word. Even if you are surrounded by negativity during the day, come back to the Word of God and renew your mind.
The Word of God is the answer.
2. Stop Feeding the Desires of the Flesh
Romans 8:5 says:
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”
What you think about and what you continually focus on will grow in your life.
If someone constantly feeds lust, lust will become stronger. If someone constantly feeds anger, anger will grow. If someone constantly focuses on material things, those things will begin to control their life.
You have to stop feeding what you are trying to overcome.

Romans chapters 6, 7, and 8 are powerful when it comes to overcoming sin.
Romans 6:14 says:
“For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”
Many people believe they have to live defeated. They think they will always struggle with the same sins forever. But that is not what the Bible teaches.
God’s grace is not an excuse to continue in sin. Grace is the power God gives us to overcome sin. Jesus came to set us free.
3. Believe What Christ Has Already Done
Romans 8:2 says:
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”
This is something we need to meditate on:
“I have been made free.”
Jesus has already accomplished victory through the cross.
Many people are waiting for God to someday give them freedom, but Jesus has already provided freedom. We need to believe His Word, receive what He has done, and walk in that freedom.
The Bible says:
“Whoever the Son sets free is free indeed.”
The truth sets us free, and Jesus is the truth.
This is what faith is: believing what God has said and living according to it.
Maybe you have said, “I’ve tried to stop, but I can’t.”
Start believing what God says about you.
You are not a slave to sin. You are a child of God. You have the Holy Spirit living inside you. You have been given grace and strength through Jesus Christ.
You don’t have to be controlled by your flesh. You can overcome.

That does not mean we ignore the reality of temptation. Our flesh still tries to pull us in the wrong direction, but we are no longer powerless. We have been born again, and the Spirit of God lives within us.
Romans 8:11 says that the same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead dwells in us.
So believe what God has already done.
Say:
“I am free from the power of sin. I do not have to be controlled by my flesh. I have the grace of God. I have the power of the Holy Spirit. I can overcome through Jesus Christ.”
This is how you overcome addiction. This is how you break free from a life of pornography, anger, bitterness, and destructive habits.
It begins with the Word of God.
Stop believing the lie that you are trapped forever. Start believing the truth of what Jesus has done. Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, I pray for everyone listening. Strengthen them by Your Word. Help them to walk in the freedom that Jesus has provided. If someone has never been saved, I pray that they would call on the name of the Lord and be saved. Help them believe in their heart that Jesus died, rose again, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
